We often get asked the question ‘What is Forex Trading?’ especially from those who are currently trading stocks or have been told about the FX markets from a friend or colleague at work.
Trading forex (FX) gives you access to the world’s largest and most liquid market. With an estimated daily turnover of more than $4 trillion, the FX market provides trading opportunities across major currencies and FX crosses, with volumes and value that surpass the size of the equities and bond markets combined.
Forex trading is usually done on ‘margin’, which means you only need a small amount as deposit to open a trade. Trading the major currencies usually require an average of 1% - 2% margin. There are no commission charges when you trade Forex. However, you have to be mindful of the spreads – the difference between the buying and selling price – which could vary at times.*
*Margin trading demands a disciplined approach and a solid understanding of the risks involved.
When you trade FX, you are simultaneously buying a currency and selling another. For example, if you expect the EUR to go higher against the US dollar, you can go long (buy) the EUR/USD pair. If you think the EUR will be lower than the USD, then you can go short (sell) the EUR/USD pair.
Trading FX on MT4 gives you access to Expert Advisors (EAs) and several smart tools to enhance your trading experience. You can place automatic orders, monitor open positions, set up stop loss levels or be alerted to winning trades. You can also monitor global FX movements using the session map tool that show which markets are opening at certain times of the day.
